1 hour, 50 minutes
This presentation will focus on the principles of Dr. Lilli Nielsen’s Active Learning approach, with special emphasis on its use in early intervention.  We will begin by exploring Active Learning Principles, and then look at specific materials and activities that can be done in the home environment.  We will also look at the Active Learning Space website https://activelearningspace.org/ and discuss how it can be used to support families and practitioners.
Presented by Charlotte Cushman & Kate Hurst

Kate Hurst is an Education Consultant with Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired Outreach Programs and one of the co-collaborators in the development of Active Learning Space website. She has almost 40 years of experience working with children who are deafblind and have additional disabilities in the classroom and as a technical assistance provider with TSBVI Outreach Programs.

Charlotte Cushman is the manager of the Active Learning Space https://activelearningspace.org/ and Paths to Literacy https://www.pathstoliteracy.org/, both of which are collaborations between Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) and Perkins School for the Blind.  Charlotte has been in the field for 40 years, and has worked as a classroom teacher with children with visual impairments and additional disabilities, and also as an education consultant for the New England Center Deafblind Project and Perkins International.
