Abstract
It’s More than a Touch: Early Tactual Development in Infants and Toddlers
Tactual development is critical for emerging braille skills and learning about the world. For years, we have assumed that visual impairment affects the ability of young children to reach out and explore their world, but is that what the research shows? As we learn more about infant brain development and new learning philosophies, updated tactual development research has addressed this complex sense in all young children.
In this presentation we will explore what we now know about different early tactual skills, exploratory procedures and how they build strong tactual brain connections, and opportunities to practice tactual skills in routines and natural environments with families. Learning objectives will be facilitated through video demonstrations and small group activities.
Learning objectives:
In this presentation we will explore what we now know about different early tactual skills, exploratory procedures and how they build strong tactual brain connections, and opportunities to practice tactual skills in routines and natural environments with families. Learning objectives will be facilitated through video demonstrations and small group activities.
Learning objectives:
- Participants will discuss early tactual development research and what we know now.
- Participants will be able to describe exploratory procedures in tactual development.
- Participants will create routine-based tactual strategies to use with families in home environments.
