Abstract
Effectively Using Tele-Intervention to Support Families
Early intervention programs are faced with the challenge of meeting the needs of an increasing population of early-identified children with limited resources and an inadequate number of highly qualified providers. This challenge is further heightened by the added difficulties of serving families in more remote, rural areas and families who speak a language other than English. Many regions are sparsely populated with limited access to qualified professionals. Programs throughout the country are turning to tele-intervention or visual visits to support the needs of families and providers throughout their region. Tele-intervention has proven to be an effective, cost-efficient tool to provide mentoring, consultation, training, and direct service to families and professionals around the state. This format for intervention brings new opportunities and new challenges and can be used by professionals to support a variety of goals.
Our presenters will each share their experiences using tele-intervention. This will provide a close look at how tele-intervention is impacting our work with children and families from the perspective of a clinical audiologist, a listening and spoken language specialist, a teacher of the deaf, and a parent mentor. This session will explore ways to most effectively use tele-intervention to support the goals of the family and provide access to qualified professionals that are not within the area, organizing a tele-intervention session, implementing effective coaching strategies, and using this technology to engage a family.
