Abstract
Trauma Informed Care: A Strengths Based Approach to Forster Resiliency
When family members receive the news their child has been identified as deaf or hard of hearing, it is not unusual for parents and other family members to experience grief that can continue throughout the early years and beyond. Many providers do not feel equipped to “break the news” or have enough tools to support families through their journey after identification.
EHDI providers can play a crucial role through their ongoing care post identification in helping foster resiliency in families. Trauma informed care and practice is a strengths-based framework that can help providers understand that the identification of hearing loss can be traumatic and still find ways to support parents towards empowerment and a sense of control. Families who feel empowered and supported are more likely to use their strengths to help overcome challenges.
