Language Development Scales

Language Development Scales: What's New & Improved
Language Dev Scales Presentation

Abstract

Language Development Scales: What's New & Improved
  • Paula Pittman, Ph.D.
The Language Development Scale was developed by the SKI-HI Institute as an assessment tool that was developed to monitor the language development of infants, toddlers and young children who are deaf or hard of hearing and are receiving early intervention services. It was originally designed for EI professionals using the SKI-HI Model of Early Intervention, but it has been used by a variety of programs throughout the US and around the world to monitor child progress and assist early intervention providers in programming services for the child and family.

The tool has been proven to be reliable and valid in assessing communication and language skills of young deaf or hard of hearing children regardless of the communication approach they are using. The Language Development Scale has recently been revised so milestones are easier to recognize and appropriate indicators for both ASL and spoken language development are provided.

In this presentation the new features of the Language Development Scale will be discussed and participants will have a chance to see what the tool looks like and how it can be used to track the progress of the children they serve.  Come and see what’s new and different!

Learning objectives
  • Gain a basic understanding of the Language Development Scale and how to assess a child’s language development using the scale.
  • Receive an overview of items that have been updated and how the new tool differs from the old tool in order to gain an awareness in how to use the tool effectively.
  • Observe and rate child language skills from a series of video examples.
  • Observe video clips of EI providers using the tool with families to gain ideas and skills in how to share the tool with families.
